Massage Therapy & Wellness
Myofascial Release (MFR), the John F. Barnes, PT approach is gentle, non-injurious and highly effective. It focuses on releasing restrictive barriers within the three dimensional web-like structure in our bodies, what is known as fascia. This web-like structure interconnects, binds, supports, and is interwoven throughout each muscle fiber, nerve, bone and organ. When trauma occurs to the body, the fascia can start to have a 'shrink wrap' effect on all these pain sensitive structures, and can end up causing approximately 2,000 lbs per square inch of tensile pressure upon these areas. This pressure will not show up on Xrays, CAT scans, etc. It can cause a whole array of symptoms and debilitating pain, which overtime, if untreated, can turn into disease.
MFR is usually performed without the use of lotions, oils, creams, or any machinery. It is a hands-on technique that is generally described as a gentle sustained stretch into the body's connective tissue, which allows it to unwind naturally. During treatment, it is encouraged to quiet down and focus on breathing allowing the body and mind to fully take the brakes off. This therapy is best performed skin on skin contact, so it is advised to bring shorts and for women either a two piece bathing suit, or shorts and a sports bra/tank top. By wearing minimal but comfortable clothing you will be able to relax and maintain your comfort level of exposure with different stretches or positions. This provides an opportunity for maximum benefits, and allows the body complete its healing process.
The benefits of MFR are unending and are astonishingly long lasting. Myofascal Release is great for helping relieve these conditions and much more:
